Historic Pharmacy of the Certosa di Trisulti | Collepardo, Italy

Antica Farmacia della Certosa di Trisulti

The Ancient Pharmacy of the Certosa di Trisulti, located in the hills of Collepardo in central Italy, is a beautifully preserved example of historical herbal medicine. Built in the 18th century by Carthusian monks, the pharmacy was used to prepare natural remedies, ointments, and medicinal mixtures using herbs from the surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the original pharmacy rooms, complete with 18th-century wooden cabinets, glass and ceramic jars, and beechwood boxes that once held medicinal preparations. The space is enriched by stunning Pompeian-style frescoes by Giacomo Manco and paintings by Filippo Balbi in the former waiting room. Outside, the formal garden—once used to cultivate healing plants—still evokes the site’s botanical past. The Certosa’s ancient pharmacy offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of monastic science and the long tradition of plant-based healing.
