Pharmacy Museum-MNIT | Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Muzeul Farmaciei - Muzeul Național de Istorie a Transilvaniei
The Pharmacy Museum in Cluj-Napoca is housed in the historic Hintz House, located in Piața Unirii, right in the heart of the city. This building holds special significance as it was home to the city’s first pharmacy, established in 1573, making it a unique and authentic setting for exploring the history of pharmaceutical practice in Transylvania. Today, the museum operates as a branch of the National Museum of Transylvanian History and preserves both the spirit and structure of its original function. The museum’s collection features over 3,500 objects, including glass, ceramic, wooden, and metal containers, as well as historical books, manuscripts, tools, scales, and weights, mostly from the 17th to 19th centuries. Visitors can explore faithfully preserved rooms such as the pharmacist’s office, the storeroom, and the underground laboratory. Of special note are the original furnishings, 18th-century frescoes with pharmaceutical symbols on the ceiling, and traditional instruments used in the preparation of medicines. The Pharmacy Museum offers an immersive journey into the world of early pharmacy, in the very house where a real pharmacist once lived and worked.
