Ancient Apothecary of Martinengo Community | Martinengo, Italy

Farmacia Antica Spezieria della Comunità di Martinengo

The Ancient Apothecary of the Community of Martinengo represents a rare example of uninterrupted pharmaceutical activity spanning over seven centuries. Historical research conducted across major archives in Venice, Milan, Brescia, Bergamo and Martinengo traces its documented origins to 1461, with evidence of its current location dating back to 1541—likely within the former municipal broletto.

What makes this site exceptional is its continuous operation: the pharmacy has remained open to the public, through the same entrance, for nearly six centuries. This continuity embodies a living tradition of materia medica, where knowledge, practice and community service have been transmitted across generations.

The apothecary preserves an important heritage collection, including historical vessels, tools, books and archival documents displayed alongside a modern galenic laboratory. Architectural elements such as a 17th-century stone portal (1639) and a 19th-century pharmacy counter further enhance its authenticity, offering visitors a tangible link between past and present pharmaceutical practices.

Today, the pharmacy actively promotes heritage dissemination through digital storytelling, educational collaborations and public engagement.
