Embedded within the framework of the European route of Historic Pharmacies and Medicinal Gardens – Aromas Itinerarium Salutis, certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, the Conference represents a concrete example of how the heritage of materia medica can be preserved, interpreted and shared at a European level.
A programme bridging science, art and territory
The Conference offers a multidisciplinary programme reflecting the richness of pharmaceutical heritage.
Key highlights include:
- the presentation of the book “Guide to Wild Medicinal Plants of Menorca, Mallorca and the Pityusic Islands”by Marc Moll;
- the exhibition “Ignored Beauty”, which invites visitors to rediscover the often-overlooked value of Mediterranean wild flora. The exhibition highlights the role of medicinal plants in the history of healing, exploring their therapeutic properties, biodiversity and connection to traditional knowledge. Through an accessible and engaging approach, it restores scientific and cultural recognition to species often considered “ordinary,” encouraging reflection on the relationship between nature, health and knowledge.
- a chamomile sensory workshop;
- guided visits to the former Naval Military Hospital and the Hauser & Wirth gallery
Illa del Rei: a living heritage site
Illa del Rei stands as a symbolic place where medicine, territory and community intersect. The former military hospital has evolved into a dynamic cultural space where heritage is not only preserved, but actively experienced.
The Conference thus becomes a living heritage laboratory, where scientific knowledge, traditional practices and contemporary communication approaches converge.
Between local community and European dimension
The event fully reflects the objectives of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, promoting an integrated vision that connects local scale with a broader European dimension.
Through active public participation and the involvement of institutions, professionals and communities, the Conference reinforces the role of heritage as a driver for cultural and sustainable development.
An experience between knowledge and senses
The Conference offers an immersive experience where the dialogue between science, art and nature allows visitors to rediscover the contemporary relevance of materia medica, making it accessible, tangible and shared.
