The Hygeia Legacy – 2nd Edition

Building the Future from Heritage through Education

The 2024 edition of the international seminar The Hygeia Legacy takes place in Rijeka, Croatia, on 11–12 March, and is promoted by the International Association Aromas Itinerarium Salutis, in collaboration with Jadran Galenski Laboratorij (JGL) and its JGL Pharmacy Museum, the City of Rijeka, the Rijeka Tourist Board, the City Museum of Rijeka and the University of Rijeka.

Under the title Building the Future from Heritage through Education, the seminar places at its core the educational value of Europe’s pharmaceutical heritage as a tool for cultural development, collective well-being and social sustainability. Historic pharmacies, medicinal gardens, science museums and university gardens are explored as places of knowledge transmission, where history, science, environment and community converge.

The second edition of The Hygeia Legacy brings together delegations from 12 European countries, including scholars, curators, cultural professionals, public institutions, foundations and educational networks. The event aims to analyse and share innovative models of participatory heritage enhancement, with a strong focus on creating accessible experiencesactively including diverse audiences, and developing educational strategies that transmit pharmaceutical memory in a contemporary, intergenerational and intercultural way.

The programme includes scientific sessions, workshops, technical visits and experiential activities, with the aim of building a shared framework of educational practices rooted in pharmaceutical heritage. The initiative is part of the broader process toward the certification of the European Route of Historic Pharmacies and Medicinal Gardens within the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes Programme.

The Hygeia Legacy stands as a key moment for strengthening the international AIS network and for promoting an integrated vision of culture, education, health and active citizenship.
