Vieksniai Pharmacy museum | Vieksniai, Lithuania
Viekšnių vaistinės muziejus
Located in the historic centre of Vieksniai, near the market square, the Vieksniai Pharmacy Museum is housed in a building dating back to 1860, originally belonging to a rabbinical family. The pharmacy was established by German pharmacist Theodor von Goeldner, marking the beginning of pharmaceutical practice in the village and surrounding region.
The site preserves a remarkable continuity of professional and family life: after Goeldner’s death, the pharmacy was managed by Vincentas Aleksandravičius and later by his son Juozas, with the family working and living in the same building for nearly a century. The house also served as a meeting place for local intellectuals, reflecting its cultural significance beyond healthcare.
Today, the museum retains authentic interiors, including living quarters, original furniture, and an extensive collection of pharmaceutical materials—prescriptions, substances, tools, and preparations—documenting the evolution of pharmacy and materia medica. Notably, the pharmacy remained active through periods of war and political upheaval.
A distinctive feature is the medicinal garden, restored in 1997 based on historical plant use. It hosts around 100 species, including protected plants listed in the Lithuanian Red Book. The garden supports educational activities, connecting visitors with traditional herbal knowledge through workshops and experiential learning.
