Museum of Pharmacy-Brukenthal National Museum | Sibiu, Romania
Muzeul de Istorie a Farmaciei-Muzeul National Brukenthal
The Museum of Pharmacy in Sibiu, part of the Brukenthal National Museum, was opened in 1972 and is located in a historic building where a private pharmacy has operated since 1602. Sibiu holds a key place in the history of pharmacy, as the first documented pharmacy on the current territory of Romania dates back to 1494.
The museum houses an exceptional collection of over 6,600 objects dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, originating from more than 60 pharmacies, medical institutions and private collections across Romania and Europe. It is the only museum in the country that preserves a historical homeopathic collection, offering a comprehensive perspective on the evolution of materia medica and pharmaceutical practices.
Beyond its permanent exhibition, the museum is actively engaged in cultural and educational initiatives. Projects such as “History of Pharmacy Traditions in Sibiu” promote health education, community involvement and the dissemination of pharmaceutical heritage. The institution regularly organises guided tours, lectures on health literacy, and educational programmes for children, fostering awareness of the historical and social dimensions of medicine.
The museum also contributes to scientific dialogue through the organisation of symposia and conferences, addressing topics such as apitherapy, complementary therapies and the relationship between agriculture, food and human health.
